Heavily textured original artwork
At the heart of this piece sits a single impression: a rounded seal, raised from the canvas in layers of textured black and bronze, bearing three words picked out in gold — Allah, Rasūl, Muhammad — read from top to bottom.
This inscription is not invented. It is drawn from history, the seal ring of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, described in the hadith as a simple silver ring engraved with the words "Muhammad Rasūl Allah" (Muhammad, Messenger of God), arranged in three stacked lines. The Prophet ﷺ had it made after learning that foreign rulers would not accept unsealed letters, and from then on it was pressed into wax to seal his correspondence to kings and emperors, including the rulers of Byzantium, Persia, and Egypt, as he invited them to Islam.
This work takes that small, weathered object, a signet no larger than a coin, responsible for carrying a message across empires and enlarges it into something monumental. The scorched gold and rust surrounding it evokes wax, fire, and age: the residue of something pressed and sealed centuries ago, still legible.
It is a piece about the weight carried by small things, how a single seal, no bigger than a thumbprint, once stood in for a voice that could not travel itself.
Read top to bottom, the seal states: Allah, Prophet, Muhammad. Read bottom to top, the same three words become a declaration: Muhammad, Prophet of Allah the direction of reading turning a list of names into a statement of faith.
