The Drape

A single form hangs suspended against a soft, empty field, fabric caught mid-fold, the way the Kaaba's covering was once lifted and drawn back. Beneath the black kiswa, the fresh white cloth underneath is revealed where the drape parts, a moment recalling how the covering was traditionally raised and folded during the pilgrimage season, exposing the pale fabric beneath before the new black cloth was laid over it. Beneath the fold, the drape rests against a weathered brick-red ground, worn, textured, ancient, grounding the fabric in stone.

This piece is built from memory rather than reference. Growing up, the Kaaba I knew as the iconic visual printed on velvet was present in almost every home I knew, hung somewhere central in the living room. As those homes changed, as interiors got quieter, more considered, more neutral — that imagery started to feel out of place. Not because the meaning had faded, but because the form it came in hadn't kept pace with the rooms it lived in. The velvet rugs were retired, and with them, something that had quietly anchored the house.

The Drape is an attempt to bring that reminder back in a form that belongs in the spaces we live in now. Stripped of ornament and colour, reduced to fabric, void, and stone, it holds the same quiet weight the original images did, without asking to be hidden away as the room evolves around it.

It's not a picture of the Kaaba. It's the feeling of it, folded, suspended, and made to last.
